Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business with his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product within a personal series highlighting issues the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
The recent development deepens the continuing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
