Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Recording That Provoked the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in defense or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an vow to defend and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out orders that violate the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a heated reply from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a combined declaration condemning the remarks.
"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our United States with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged digital publications and withdraw his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
Officials' Strong Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this country and took an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important duty."
"The significant point is that the president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the former president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of elected officials."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should censure this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the federal government who worked together to organize a video message to individuals of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the commander in chief's proper directives."
She added: "The sanctity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
