Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks advance
People have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.
The source said the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Future administration of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location seems like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of the population prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, bombardments were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side district, area and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the night arrives, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, notably my little child who places his head on me all night."
"Continuously we check the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, medics said.
