Goalkeeper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her freshly launched autobiography was never intended to “criticize individuals” and voiced unease that audience feedback has been “misinterpreted.”

The ex-Lionesses goalkeeper, who had a vital part in the championship win, received criticism from supporters and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about past Lioness Hannah Hampton and manager Sarina Wiegman.

In her book, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by recalling Hampton to the national team after omitting her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“It’s been really overwhelming to see how parts were misrepresented,” Earps shared in an interview.

Explaining Her Motives

Earps firmly declared that her book was not designed to damage anyone.

• “I’ve not written this book to damage reputations in any manner.”
• “That doesn’t reflect my character as a human being.”
• “This is real life. It has consequences. It is not entertainment.”

She also discussed how women’s football has evolved into a realm that has become “a bit like entertainment,” where individual stories are scrutinized heavily for audience entertainment.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps mentioned losing the starting position as the starting goalkeeper before the European Championship and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She explained it was “not an abrupt downfall” in their relationship—just a divergence in opinions—and she still respects the coach.

“Several incidents that happened in the summer that I would have preferred to go another way,” Earps remarked.

Personal Struggles

In her memoir, Earps opened up about the harassment she endured at in her younger years, describing it as a “extremely difficult” section to read again because it brought back previous trauma.

• “I was conditioned to feel like nobody really cares.”

These emotions led to panic attacks, and Earps revealed she faced challenges with physical appearance and used alcohol during the lockdown period to cope with anxiety and depression.

Private Matters and Aspirations

Earps publicly revealed that she is in a partnership with Kitty and expressed pride about her connection with Kitty.

She also talked about her hopes for motherhood and revealed she has preserved her eggs for future use.

“I really want to be a parent and have a family of my own,” Earps commented. “I am passionate about soccer, but I hope to have a child in the future.”

Earps portrayed the fertility process as “crazy and invasive” and pushed for more studies tailored to players undergoing comparable treatments.

Throughout the interview, Earps reiterated that she has no regrets about her professional journey or individual actions, stressing that she always proceeded with principle.
