Warrick Stock was shot by a suspect with dreadlocked hair in broad daylight, police say.

A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The motive of the incident has not been established and no one has been arrested have taken place, police said.

How It Happened

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a building in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the property managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"The report indicates the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and clad in what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down a short distance away.

It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the crime scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and police have been tracking them to determine their destination," stated a police chief.

Family and Public Reaction

His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.

"Words fail me. I am shattered," she said.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were ready to tackle. This is a devastating blow."

She requested the community to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the incident, explaining this was an deeply traumatic time, especially for Stock's young family.

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that premiered on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.

Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including private security, supplying high-level security services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in real estate operations and assisted with building evictions.

His death has caused national trauma and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the government and political parties.

A cabinet official commented he was angry and saddened by Stock's murder.

"He was forthright without fear or favour. He even spoke up against me and my policies as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we should be," the minister added.

A public representative commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A media executive said that "DJ Warras was far beyond a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a passionate music lover and a kind-hearted individual who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."

In a statement, the network he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and quick humor, adding that his influence "will endure".
