Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He fought justice and justice triumphed.
A couple of months following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems headed to prison.
Anticipated Incarceration
The found-guilty instigator – who has been subject to residential detention in his mansion while a series of court processes and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid increasing talk that he will be moved to a infamous high-security penitentiary.
Past Statements on Convicts
Throughout Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- military man showed little mercy for the country's inmates.
“What’s the need to give those scoundrels a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They should just get messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish behind bars, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”
Incarceration Destination Discussion
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent attempt to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.
The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he expected the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” said the senator, who also worried about cramped cells and the standard of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells holding 40 inmates: “That is virtually one meter squared per detainee.
“We spoke to the convicts and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible cuisine,” continued the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
He is not the sole person expressing views before the ex-leader's anticipated detention.
Authoring in a leading publication, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest wrong in its record”.
“It is an unfairness that eats away the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed Popular Response
It is possibly accurate given the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. But his expected jailing has also warmed the feelings of millions others who believe he should be imprisoned for conspiring to stop the elected leader from becoming president – and even plotting to have him assassinated.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the current president's political party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to receive respectful handling – but proper handling in prison. He can’t persist being his own prison warden for his whole life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years celebrating the tough conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the far-right – which has always asserted that human rights should not be for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a penitentiary to find out what situations are actually like,” he stated.
“The former president is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, demeaning treatment”.
Potential Prison Facilities
In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 detainees, his more likely location looks to be a nearby prison for law enforcement and other “unique” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
His potential cell are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning leader's home, about 12 miles away.
According to information, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the size of two parking spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre veranda. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a television and also a minibar in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” sources suggested.
Ideological Reactions
The lawmaker criticized the rumoured plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
