This technique is most effective for little planters and varieties sensitive to wet feet, for instance moth orchids. Yet, most of tropical foliage plants do not appreciate the cold. Their root structures developed for temperate conditions, and freezing water can stress or harm them. The surrounding temperature plays a major part in the hack's effectiveness: in a toasty environment, the ice will dissolve rapidly, giving scant benefit, while in a chilly spot it may linger excessively, lowering the temperature of the roots and impeding absorption.
