The English Team to Launch Euro 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the anticipated qualification for a competition staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an Three Lions fixture since eight years ago, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the Three Lions for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
England are set to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
Championship Opening and Protest
The tournament was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from Uefa and the host FAs were heckled as they entered the venue by about 50 activists, who called for Israel’s national side to be expelled from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Banners were raised with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The first match of the European Championship will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will attract households and help connect with a wider spectrum of fans.
Host Nations
The Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through that route.
Locations and Knockout Stage
Villa Park and The North London arena finalize the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches played at every host’s main arena.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“This will be a championship for the followers and a showcase of everything we love about the game – its fervor and power to bring people together.”
Over 3 million tickets, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be offered to supporters.
