What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
